A Proper Banking License
First things first—bunq is not just a fintech app but a legitimate online bank. We operate under a full European banking license provided by the Dutch National Bank (DNB). This means that we have a Deposit Guarantee Scheme (DGS), which insures up to €100,000 of your money. Rest assured, we safeguard your deposits with the utmost care.
Delayed Payments for Extra Peace of Mind
To protect you from fraud, we introduced Delayed Payments. Whenever you make a payment that our system flags as suspicious, it appears as if the payment has already been made (the amount appears to have been debited and your balance updated), while in reality, the money remains safely with us for another 24 hours. This gives you time to cancel the payment via the app if necessary.
Name Mismatch Alerts
When sending money, you benefit from additional warning messages in case the name does not match the IBAN number. This gives you the opportunity to cancel (or confirm) the payment, adding an extra layer of security.
Safety Lock for Suspicious Activity
If bunq has a reasonable suspicion that something could be wrong with your account, all payments and cards will be paused, and your access to bunq will be frozen. You can only continue after confirming an additional facial scan in combination with your login code.
Protecting Against Unauthorized Access
Fraudsters are known to try to convince people to install software on their devices as a way to gain access to these devices. If we have reason to suspect this may have happened to you, we will immediately limit the use of your account to safeguard your information.
Virtual Credit Cards for Extra Security
Purchasing something from a new website and unsure how safe it is to share your card details? No worries—use a virtual credit card. You can disable it as soon as you’ve made the purchase to ensure your money's safety. Keep in mind that you can only use this feature up to 20 times per year, and it’s available if you’re an Easy Bank Pro or Easy Bank Pro XL user.
Protecting Your CVC
If you look at your beautiful bunq card, you’ll notice there’s no CVC code on it. This extra layer of security keeps you safe in case you misplace your card. If someone somehow gets a hold of your CVC, you can immediately change it in the app. To ensure there's never an issue, you can set your CVC code to automatically regenerate every 5 minutes. You can do this from your Cards screen after selecting the desired card.
Choosing Your Log-out Time and Payment Limits
When you become a bunq user, your app is automatically set to log you out after 5 minutes. For added security, you can set this to 0 seconds. Additionally, you can set a limit on how much you spend in a day without entering your security code. Whether it’s €1 or €1,000, the choice is yours. Set this up in your Security settings and have complete control over your spending.
Immediate Support if Needed
At bunq, you have control over your account 24/7, without needing a help desk or account manager. Thanks to real-time push messages, you are immediately informed of what is happening on your account. If you suspect something is wrong, you can immediately change your security code via the app or call our emergency number (+31 208 083 666). Our SOS support will help within 10 minutes if other methods fail.
Lastly, there’s one very simple way you can make sure you and your account stay safe and is to remember: bunq will NEVER call you. We’ll only ever reach out to you through our secure in-app chat.
