Mexico City Travel Guide: Where to Go, Eat, and Stay

Skip the obvious. This Mexico City guide focuses on design-forward stays, standout food, and places locals actually return to.

Mexico City is big. Not just in size, but in pace, contrast, and choice. You could spend a week here and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface.

So instead of trying to do everything, do a few things well.

This guide is built around places that feel considered. Spots you’d go back to. The kind you text a friend about after.

Where to Stay

1. Casa Octavia

Tucked away in Condesa, Casa Octavia offers a quieter stay while still keeping you close to everything.

The design leans minimal but warm. Wood, soft lighting, nothing overworked. It’s the kind of place that feels calm the moment you step inside, especially after a full day out in the city.

You’re within walking distance of Parque México, cafés, and most of the restaurants you’ll likely end up going to, but just far enough from the busiest streets to avoid the noise.

Where to Eat & Drink

2. Expendio de Maíz

Expendio de Maíz is one of the most talked-about spots in the city, and it holds up.

There is no menu. You sit down, and dishes are based on what is available that day. Fresh tortillas, grilled vegetables, something richer, then something lighter again. Everything revolves around corn, but it never feels repetitive.

It is not a quick meal. Service moves at its own pace, and most people stay longer than they planned. Go when you have time and let it run.

3. Lardo

Lardo sits on a corner in Condesa and always seems to be exactly as busy as you’d expect.

By day, it’s filled with natural light and long tables. People come in for coffee and end up staying for lunch. By the afternoon, it settles into something quieter without ever really emptying.

The menu leans Mediterranean, with simple dishes done well. Vegetables, bread, pasta, good olive oil. It’s not trying to be the most exciting place in the city, but it’s one of the most consistent.

4. Panadería Rosetta

Panadería Rosetta is rarely quiet, but it’s still worth stepping into.

The space is compact, with people moving in and out quickly. Trays of pastries come out constantly, and the guava one disappears just as fast. It’s soft, slightly tart, and easy to eat on the go.

This is not a place to sit for long. It’s a stop, then a walk, ideally through Roma with something in hand.

Tip: When you’re bouncing between places like this, splitting small bills is easy with bunq.me. No one has to keep track.

5. Ticuchi

Ticuchi shifts everything into evening mode.

The lights drop, the space closes in a bit, and the focus moves to the bar and the open fire behind it. The menu is plant-based, but it doesn’t make a point of it. It’s just good food, done with care.

The mezcal list is long, and worth taking your time with. This is not a quick dinner. It’s where the night settles.

Where to Explore

6. LagoAlgo

Set deep inside Chapultepec Park, LagoAlgo feels slightly removed from the rest of the city.

You walk past trees, away from the traffic, and arrive at a space that opens up completely. Glass, water, light. Inside, exhibitions rotate regularly, but even without them, the setting carries it.

It’s easy to sit here longer than planned, especially if you order something and watch the afternoon shift.

7. Kurimanzutto

Kurimanzutto is one of the city’s most established galleries, but it doesn’t feel heavy or over-curated.

The space is clean, almost quiet, and the exhibitions do most of the work. Sometimes it hits, sometimes less so, but when it does, it’s one of the better stops in the city.

8. Biblioteca Vasconcelos

Biblioteca Vasconcelos is hard to explain until you’re inside it.

The scale is the first thing you notice. Rows of bookshelves stacked high and stretched out, almost suspended, creating a space that feels more architectural than functional.

People move quietly through it, and even if you’re only there for a short time, it leaves an impression.

Whether you’re in Mexico City for a few days or staying longer, it doesn’t take much before the city starts to feel familiar.

With bunq in your pocket, you can move through it easily. Pay, split, save, and explore without thinking too much about it.
