Changing careers to backend development
I spent my early 20s studying at engineering schools, but my time pursuing a master’s in Milan was one of the best periods of my student life. Later, I found myself working in the defense and gaming industry, but I was not in a position where I could derive sufficient satisfaction from what I created. It suddenly hit me—that this feeling would not disappear until I changed my career to a role that allowed me to better utilize my education, to produce things I could be proud of. This was the moment for me to reconsider my career, because when you experience this feeling: money, position, titles, etc., become utterly meaningless. Within a few days, I handed in my resignation and started considering what was next. Back then, working closely with the backend team in the gaming company, they helped me realize that working on the backbone side was exactly what I was looking for. I am very grateful to my friends who assisted me in finding the role that I’ve enjoyed doing since the change.
Joining bunq in Istanbul
I joined bunq as a backend developer in the Istanbul office, the first to occupy such a position here. Of course, many questions crossed my mind about whether I could adapt to a career change at the age of 30. However, just after I started, all those questions vanished. I realized it was a great decision! We have an amazing backend team at bunq, with people who are not only experts in their fields, but also great personalities to have fun with.
Building with passion at bunq
To sum up my story, I want to share a poignant quote from “Samarkand,” by Amin Maalouf: “Time has two faces, Khayyam said to himself. It has two dimensions, its length is measured by the rhythm of the sun, but its depth by the rhythm of passion.” Every morning, I sit at my desk and open my laptop with the passion to change the banking status quo with bunq and my colleagues.
